DANCE RANCH MARFA- Ensemble Thinking Investigation.

What: Using Nina Martin's Ensemble Thinking, we will examine group improvisation. Ensemble Thinking, a toolbox for performance, consists of scores/concepts that allow the performer(s) and the audience to
clearly observe and participate in the improvisation as it unfolds. As a group consists of individuals we will also explore the improvisation of the individual body and the improvisation of contact between bodies. We will
also explore choreography as a means to discover new pathways in the body and mind and challenge the personal critic. Each day will consist of two working periods. The goal of this workshop isto give the performer clarity of options in improvisation.
The workshop will begin with a lecture/discussion led by Nina Martin about the relationship of choreography, improvisation, the solo body, the group mind, and different modalities of training to performance.
Friday night there will be a performance for the Marfa community. We will also have time for discussion and getting to know each other outside the studio.

West Coast Contact Improvisation Festival

Yes, No, Maybe

June 30th 2007 Western Sky

After a solo warm up, we will examine the two basic actions that can happen at the point of contact- resistance(No) and acquiescence(Yes). How do resistance and acquiescence relate to your center, your partner's center, the floor, and the point of contact? How can these two colors, resistance and acquiescence, be combined to form any number of shades(Maybe)? What can happen when we fully embrace the No? What can happen when we give into the Yes? How can we slide along this spectrum between these extremes in multiple points of contact? What can we do with Maybe?

led by Nina Martin, Margaret Paek,
Andrew Wass, Kelly Dalrymple @ Earth Dance

Sept. 27 (Thurs. evening) - Sept. 30 (Sun. afternoon)

In these four days, we will use Ensemble Thinking (developed by Nina Martin) to dive into performative group improvisation. (A $25 discount is available for those who register by August 17th).

Nina, Andrew, Kelly and Margaret have been working together for over six years. While living in San Diego and as artists with Lower Left, they had great opportunities to further develop Nina’s Ensemble Thinking. Now living in separate parts of the country (Texas, New York and California), they continue to find ways to work and play together. Individual Bios can be found at www.lowerleft.org.
